Pessary fittings

Pessaries for pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence.

Pessaries are silicone devices used to manage pelvic organ prolapse or urinary incontinence. Some women wear them all the time, while others only need them during physical activities for extra support. Think of them like a sports bra, but for your vagina – they go inside the vaginal canal to support and lift the descent of the vaginal walls or uterus.

Pessaries come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, just like vaginas. The majority of women have instant relief but they are not suitable for everyone.

What will happen in a pessary fitting?

A pessary fitting appointment takes up to 90 minutes.
An assessment prior may have been carried out by myself or one of my colleagues.

I can accept pessary referrals from other medical/healthcare professionals who have examined your pelvic health and prolapse; this would be discussed on a case-by-case basis and may require a 10-minute exploration call first.

Established Pessary users.

I am happy to manage pessaries that you already have in situ or have been fitted by another provider. I can change them and re-fit as required. This includes rings, both silicone and PVC, Gelhorn, shelf, Simpson pessaries, donuts and dish pessaries.

It is important that you keep up to date with your pessary checks, neglected pessaries can cause serious vaginal erosions and infections.

The assessment will include:

In the first year I recommend the following return visits 2 weeks 3 months, 6 and 12 monthly intervals.

Preparation for the appointment

Wear comfortable clothing or gym attire if you want to use the pessary for sport. If you are an existing pessary user or have been fitted with pessaries before, then please bring any pessaries that you have trialled with you.

Pessary fitting service costs £250 (excluding pessary, costs vary depending on the type of pessary £55-£75). Pessary fittings are not covered by insurance companies, and the clinic will be unable to claim

A £100 non-refundable deposit is payable at the time of booking. We are happy to reschedule your appointment, but kindly ask that you allow us at least 5 working days to do so. Deposits are not refundable if you decide to cancel your appointment.

*If you have recently been assessed by a women’s health specialist and have been recommended for a pessary, then you may be eligible to attend a pessary fitting on your first appointment.

Patients will be sent an online form to complete. I can then determine if you can come in for a pessary fitting without the need for an initial assessment.

If you haven’t been referred by a specialist but maybe travelling from afar, then on completion of the form, I can arrange a 10-minute exploration call to see if I can book you straight in for a pessary fitting or whether an initial consultation may be required first.

Please note that pessary fittings are not carried out when you are on your menstrual cycle.

Postpartum pessaries can be fitted as early as 6 weeks, however, this is determined following an assessment.
